How to Renew your U.S. Passport

U.S. Passport renewal for citizens who already have a U.S. passport is far easier than applying for first time passport applicants.

Form DS-82 is Passport Renewal by Mail

Renewal may be completed by mail and requires no proof of citizenship or ID so long as you have your old passport in hand

To renew you passport by mail, you must provide your current passport along with the application.

Don’t worry, you will not loose your old passport book or your stamps when submitting your old passport. Your old passport will be returned to you in a separate mailing.

Your current passport must fit all of the following criteria:

  • Is undamaged.
  • Was issued when you were 16 or older.
  • Was issued within the last 15 years.
  • Was issued in your current name.
    • You can legally document your name change with original or certified copy of your marriage certificate or the government-issued document
      evidencing your legal name change.

If you do not fit the above criteria you must submit a DS-11 Passport application and apply in person.

To renew your passport you must:

  1. Fill out form DS-82: Application for a U.S. Passport by mail.
  2. Submit one new Passport Photo.
  3. Submit your old passport book or passport card.
  4. Pay applicable fee (Check or Money Order)
  5. Mail document to the National Passport Processing Center

All the above documents must be included in the same envelope when you mail your passport renewal application.

1: Form DS-82: Application for U.S. Passport by Mail

You must print out a form DS-82 and complete it by hand and sign. Or you may fill out the DS-82 online and print out.

2: Attach New Passport Photo

You must take an up to date passport photo and include it with your DS-82 U.S. Passport application.

This is the best passport photo ever takenWhen attaching your passport photo to the completed DS-82 make sure you:

  • Staple the photo to the application.
  • Use 4 staples vertically in the corners as close to the outer edges as possible.
  • Do not bend the photo.

U.S. Passport photo requirements for renewal are the same as if you are applying for the first time.

Passport photos must be 2? x 2? on matte or glossy photo quality paper against a white or neutral background.

Make sure you have nothing covering your face (hair or excessive makeup) and no extraneous items such as headphones or sunglasses.

No uniforms, hats or head-coverings may be worn in your passport photo unless you ware it daily for religious purposes.

No shadows should be present in the background of the photo or on the face of the applicant.

Glare on prescription glasses should not be present in any passport photo.

Keep in mind, non compliant passport photos can be a cause for passport renewal denial. places your photo against a white background sized correctly and prints on quality photo paper. No need to look for a white wall. No need to go to a store for your passport photos.

3: Submit your old Passport Book or Card

When submitting your DS-82 please include your old passport book and card in the mailing and verify that it was issued to you in the past 15 years and when you were 16 years of age or older.

You will not loose your old passport book or entry stamps!

Your old passport book will be returned to you by mail and may be include in a separate mailing from your new passport.

4: Pay Passport Renewal Fee

Payment of applicable fees for U.S. Passport Renewal must be in the form of a check or money order. Do not send cash.

Make checks payable to “U.S. Department of State.” The full name and date of birth of the applicant must be typed or printed on the front of the check.

There is no $25 execution fee when applying with a DS-82.

5: Mail Passport Renewal Application

When you have completed your DS-82, attached your new passport photo, included your old passport book or card along with payment please mail to:

The Department of State recommends that you mail your passport application and supporting documents in a large enough envelope to prevent any folding of documents. They discourage sending your passport renewal application in a standard letter-size #10 (4 1/8″ x 9 1/2″) envelope

It is also advised that you mail your passport application and any personal documents using a trackable delivery method.

If you are a frequent traveler you may request additional passport pages to be attached to your new renewed passport at no additional cost. Simply check the “52 page” box at the top of your passport renewal application.
